30 Days of Mobile Photography – Day 12

I always wonder why so many payphones still remain in Japan. I understand they still have a purpose but do we really need this many in the same spot?

    Actually, the number has decreased, in the last 15 years, however- every time there is a major earthquake in  Japan (or sometimes a major typhoon), cell phones (keitai) stop working, and the people form massive cues in front of the limited phones, bringing the government to order NTT to have more phones at major stations, like this.

    I think it's great that they remain actually! Pretty useful for people w/o cell (tourists etc..), since you cannot easily get a top-up sim card.
